Our time apart has been so difficult, but it has also brought us even closer together and confirmed the depth of our feelings for each other. Spending 10 days in Italy together is just what we needed to break up the the 9 weeks that we are apart.

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011choose the bike
Tuesday, December 6th, 2011I recently saw a version of this print on facebook and fell in love. The artist, Adam Turman, is extremely talented and I definitely want to own some of this prints.
I always choose my bike because, well, that is my only option. However, I have friends who have the option to drive and even on the most miserable of days- they will choose to bike. Just this Sunday, I invited a new friend to accompany me to a movie. As it neared time for me to leave, I was dragging my feet- not looking forward to going out in the single digit weather- but what choice did I have? I arrived at the theater to find my guest’s bike already locked to the rack. He had ridden further than I in the sub-freezing weather- by choice.
It warms my heart.
winter biking
Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011I have been car-free for two months now. In those two months, I have gone from biking in 95 degree weather to below-freezing weather with snow. Crazy, yea?
On my second post about being car-less, I mentioned sharing my rain gear for biking. I’ve yet to do that because winter is already upon us!
The one comment/questions I get over and over again when people learn that I no longer have a car is “But what will you do during the winter?”
Well, this is what I am going to do for the winter:
Monday is twas 70 degrees outside and I was able to ride in a dress. Yesterday was a bit colder and I was fine wearing tights and cowboy boots with a long heavy sweater, gloves and light scarf.
Today, however, there is no looking cute. It is time to get down to business!
For the very few of you who are interested in going car-free during the winter- I thought I would share where I got all of my winter gear.
Bike- Trek mountain bike borrowed from my lovely boss-lady
Coat- Mountain Hardwear B’Lady
(I will use this on the coldest winter days instead of my pea coat. It will come in handy for skiing, snow-shoeing and sledding!)
I bought this at REI at the end of winter last year on super-clearance. Hurry, they still have some left!
Pants- Go Lite Wind River Softshell
(Again, I will also use these pants for winter activities!)
Bought these last winter as well
Hat- Seirus Quick Clava Chess Hat
(It has a balaclava that pulls down from the top to cover the nose and mouth. It can also be worn around the neck as a neck warmer)
Also bought this last winter for training through the winter for my early spring half marathon. LOVE it!
bakasana – crow pose
Sunday, October 30th, 2011I started going to yoga on a fairly regular basis a little less than 3 weeks ago. I’ve done random classes here and there throughout the last couple of years but have never committed to going religiously until now. Yoga is good for my mind and body. For 90 minutes each time I go, I am able to forget about what is going on in the rest of my life and all of the hustle and bustle outside on the streets below. For an hour and a half 3-5 times a week I can focus on loving myself, strengthening my body and calming my mind.
I attend a variety of yoga classes depending on my mood. Bikram, Ashtanga, Hatha, Yin, Power, etc. When I want to have more of a work out I attend the power yoga classes. The term “power yoga” came into common usage in the mid 1990s. Power yoga puts an emphasis on strength and flexibility. I attended a power yoga class for the first time about 2 weeks where I was introduced to bakasana-crow pose. At the time I was thinking in my head that it should be called “Face Plantasana” because every time I tried it I fell straight on my face. Try it once and you’ll probably know what I mean.
I don’t know that this is a particularly challenging pose in the range of all yoga poses.. However, it was very difficult for me. But, I’ve been practicing off an on for the last 2 weeks and today I finally held the pose for longer than 2 seconds! In fact I held it for a couple of long breaths! What a great abdominal and arm workout!
Here’s to mastering many more “difficult” yoga poses.
