Needless to say, these shots were NOT taken in Florida- but in Kansas. The day of the session was bitter cold. The temperature was in the 30s but the wind was fierce- with the windchill in the single digits. After being gone from Kansas for so long, I forgot just how bone chilling the wind can be. I quickly learned how hard it is to manipulate the controls on a camera with fingers that are frozen! When I move to Colorado, I’ll most definitely be investing in some gloves that will allow me to shoot while keeping my hands warm.
Frida is a foreign exchange student from Norway and her host family gifted her a senior portrait session for Christmas (yes that is how far behind I am!). Frida loves horses and rides all the time in Norway, so it was only fitting that she be placed with a family in America who loves horses as well. It was important for me to be able to incorporate this into her session. Several weeks before our shoot, Frida was thrown from her horse- breaking her ankle. Thankfully it was healed enough by the time we met that her cast had been removed and all that was left was an air cast that she could manage without for a few hours.
To get the right angle for these pictures, I had to be on a horse as well. It has been YEARS since I’d been on a horse. I assured the horse keeper(??) that I had ridden before and knew what I was doing. Only I got up on the horse and definitely did NOT remember what to do. I whispered to Frida “Hey, hey.. Frida how do I get her to stop once we start?”. “Whoa,” she says. Oh, right- how could I not know that? It isn’t easy taking photos while sitting on a horse. 1-the horse wouldn’t stand still and I had to hold myself sturdy on the horse with no hands while taking the pictures and 2-I am constantly moving all around trying to find the best angle- it isn’t so easy to get a horse to go EXACTLY where you need it to be.

We did a little clothing switcheroo and Frida put on one of my dresses. I know braving the cold wasn’t easy- but she did great. We kept my car running with the heat going full blast. It was so cold that after every few shots we had to run back to the car to defrost before continuing. I am so thankful that I have clients who are willing to do whatever necessary to get good pictures!
Snow makes for a natural reflector of light that is perfect for picture taking. I really love the pop of red in these two.
These speak for themselves. We had a lot of fun playing with the camels.

The weather has been beautiful here in Florida. I’ve pulled all my favorite vintage dresses out from the back of my closet, my feet are incredibly happy in sandals and I routinely let my hair go crazy/beach style.
This will be my last summer in Florida (at least for awhile) and I’ve been trying to soak it all in and capture as many memories as I can before leaving (more about that later). Whenever I can make it, I spend my Saturday mornings at the Riverside Arts Market (I’ll post more pictures soon). There I get my fresh, locally grown, organic produce for the week and take in the amazing smells and lively music. This weekend I decided to walk along the river from Riverside to downtown to attend some Earth Day festivities and take some pictures of the Jacksonville skyline to add to the Florida photo book I hope to make.
I didn’t travel far before I was stopped by a man’s deep, southern voice- I hadn’t even noticed him.
“You take pictures, often?”, he said.
“All the time, it’s a hobby of mine”, I said”.
“You know, they say a camera never blinks. It’s amazing, the memories it can capture”
I agreed and asked his name.
“Willie”
Thats all.. just Willie. “Hi Willie, I’m Katelyn and it is a pleasure to meet you,” I said while holding out my hand.
We shook hands and I sat down beside him. Willie talked for awhile and I listened…wondering what his story was. After awile, I got up to finish my trip downtown. I told him if he was still there on my way back that I’d bring him a cold drink and we could chat more.
Fast forward 2 hours. I bought a fresh squeezed lemonade from a street vendor and wondered if Willie would still be on his bench.
He was and I gave him his drink . I don’t think his smile could have been bigger. I asked if I could photograph him. Willie enthusiastically said yes. While I was shooting I asked Willie about his life.
Where did he work before becoming homeless? Where does he sleep at night? Tell me a bit about your life?
“Maxwell House. The shelter, some nights. So many people are a few paychecks away from being homeless, especially these days-I wish people wouldn’t judge-never thought I’d be homeless-I know things will get better, they have to-someday things will be good again.”
I wish I could write more eloquently about my encounter with Willie.
I wish I could express how much our meeting moved me.
But pictures are my words, and these will have to do. I hope you can see what I feel. (Willie gave me full permission to use the photographs I took of him.)

Talk about a delay in posting pictures- these pictures of my friend, Danielle, and her daughter were taken back in October!! I am so happy I went back to look through these images. I’ve spent most of the evening going back and forth- just looking at them and smiling. They are the epitome of all things good and true. They make my heart happy and give me hope for the world.
Most of the images aren’t technically perfect, by any means. But they are real- like looking at a memory. I hope when viewing them you feel the same flutter in your tummy as I do and I hope you can hear Shy’s laughter. I can.
Just a little bit of bribery…
“There are lives I can imagine without children but none of them have the same laughter & noise.”
I love this series!! Can you hear the squeals of joy?
How perfectly fitting. Danielle calls Shy “monkey”.
I lied. This series is the winner. I had to sit with my head between my knees for a whole 5 minutes after shooting these. I almost hurled. So worth it.
Danielle has a way with words. She knows how to string words and phrases together to perfectly put the way she feels. Often times, when I least expect it, I will receive amazing strings of words from her- in the middle of the day- in the middle of the week- just because. And when I don’t call for days- sometimes weeks- when I feel like my life can’t get any more hectic and I feel like the world’s worst friend… Danielle understands and she doesn’t get upset. She doesn’t make me feel guilty about not having/making the time to just chat. Even though we live some 12,000 odd miles apart and even though we have seen each other exactly one time in the last six years or so, Danielle is one of my closest confidents. She has a heart of gold and smile that will knock you over. I’m so very thankful to have her “in” my life.

On Sunday, I had the pleasure of meeting and assisting photographer Ezra Marcos on an amazing retro lifestyle shoot. You can see his sneak peak here. Look for me on that post (hint: floral shirt).
In December, I purchased the Fujifilm Instax Mini 7s. I have been using it to capture special moments in my personal life and am absolutely in love with the pictures it produces. I usually always have it in my camera bag, but have never pulled it out for a session until Sunday. The pictures couldn’t have fit with the theme of Ezra’s shoot any better. I am so pleased with them. Here are a few:

I almost missed her. I scheduled my trip to Kansas in December around Lilah’s due date, but with newborns it is NEVER that easy. When Lilah still hadn’t arrived on her due date, I decided to change my flight in hopes of getting the timing right. Even that nearly flopped. Lilah finally arrived at 5:51 am on Sunday, December 27th-weighing just over 8 lbs and 18.5 inches long.
Jodi and Lilah made it home from the birthing center on Tuesday and I did her session Wednesday morning- hours before my plane left! I don’t think I have ever completed a newborn session so quickly and with such great results. Jodi and Cory are naturals in front of the camera and Lilah so easily soothed.
They seriously take my breath away!
Look at those cheeks!
It is so easy to take wonderful photographs when you have such beautiful subjects.
This is one of my favorite pictures of Jodi. The look on her face is so telling and it warms my heart.
The color image on the left is hanging large and in charge in the office of the doctor who delivered Lilah. Talk about ecstatic!
Jodi and Cory, I am so very happy to have had the opportunity to photograph all of your milestones (so far!). I feel incredibly privileged to still have you in my life even though we are thousands of miles apart. And I am incredibly appreciative of you opening your home to me just days after giving birth and the day after coming home from the hospital. I hope you cherish these pictures always.
P.S. I have film images from my vintage camera that I took in the hospital being developed right now. Fingers crossed!

Megan and I took a few classes/worked on projects together at the University of North Florida. When Megan graduated a year ahead of me, we lost touch until I found out that we had a mutual friend in Lowrie. Short Story- I had just bought my first camera around the time when I first met Megan back at UNF. I actually tried to get her to sit for me so I could practice portraiture, but we could never coordinate it. Nearly three years later, I finally got my chance.
I arrived at Megan’s historic Casa Marina suite before the sun even come up on a rainy and very dreary day- perfect for a wedding at the beach, yes? There wasn’t much natural light available with the combination of a one-window room and clouds blanketing the sun- but it ended up creating a really great mood for the photos.
No Bridezilla here- just a sweetness.
Megan’s dress was STUNNING. It sings (there’s no way it could scream) elegance. This was an example of a dress that was just meant to be worn on its bride. I am in love with the colors and slight grain (due to the darkness) of the left image.
Getting ready shots are my favorite part of the day- the way anticipation reveals itself in each bride is different. The next several images show it better than I can put it in words.
Her expression in these really says it all. These next 3 are some of my very favorite bridal portraits, ever. These pictures were taken in a near dark room, with the sun just rising up over the ocean and diffused by the clouds.
Can’t forget the groom- a handsome military man.
Sand dollars as place cards-genius.
More to come soon- stay tuned!
